Historic Letter To Dr. William Mayo
Developing The First Mayo Scissors!
Developing The First Mayo Scissors!
August 3, 1923, Dennis Scanlan is writing from Stockholm, Sweden, where he is spending the summer, working with a small Swedish surgical instrument firm to produce some scissors for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dennis Scanlan had visited the Mayo brothers a year earlier, carrying instruments from Sweden made of a remarkable new material, a stainless steel, that Scanlan thought the brothers, and the other surgeons at the clinic, would be interested in. The Mayos were very interested in the Stainless Steel, but wanted to modify the instrument designs. Their first project together was the development of the original Mayo scissors!

The Scanlan Family is very honored to receive this amazing letter from the Mayo Clinic in recognition of our 100 Year Anniversary!
This letter was written by my Grandfather, Dennis R. Scanlan, to Doctor William G. Mayo on August 3, 1923 – regarding the development of the first Mayo scissors.
Today, after over 100 years of success, we continue to make each instrument by hand using the finest materials, and we are proud to say that Scanlan products are in hospitals around the world helping to save lives!
