Brigid Scanlan
Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) and Scanlan International, Inc. are pleased to offer the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award for a female medical student or general surgery resident to work with a WTS mentor to gain exposure to women cardiothoracic surgeon for enrichment and education.

2024 Recipient
Rajika is a General Surgery resident at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she has completed 2 years of surgical training. She is currently in her dedicated research time in the laboratory of Dr. Brendon Stiles, where she is studying the tumor microenvironment in relation to lung cancer metastasis, as well as possible therapeutic targets for EGFR mutated cancers. She hopes to specialize in Thoracic Oncology and is passionate about health and gender disparities research. She will be mentored by Dr. Mara Antonoff, Associate Professor and Program Director of Education at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
2024 Recipient
Emily Rodriguez is a third-year medical student at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She hopes to pursue a career in adult cardiothoracic surgery and her research interests include analyzing patient safety metrics, populations-based outcomes and disparities analyses, perioperative care, and quality improvement. She is dually interested in novel cardiac surgical innovations and tracing historical precedents. Emily currently serves as the Director for the Latino Medical Student Association – Northeast, is a founding member of Latinos in Cardiothoracic Surgery, and she is a member of the Thoracic Surgery Medical Students Association, Women in Thoracic Surgery, Latino Surgical Society, and American Osler Society.
2023 Recipient
Sarah is a General Surgery resident at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, where she has completed her first three years of surgical training. Sarah is also a research fellow in the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change (PGSSC) through Harvard Medical School and an MPH candidate at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Sarah is passionate about surgical system strengthening through policy and advocacy, especially as 6 billion people worldwide lack access to safe, affordable, timely cardiothoracic surgery. Sarah will be mentored by Dr. Sara Pereira, Program Director for the Cardiothoracic Fellowship program, Surgical Director for the Structural Heart Program, and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Utah.
2023 Recipient
Kelley Benck is a 3rd year medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the MD/MPH program. Originally from Northern California, her draw to cardiothoracic surgery came from her love of working with her hands and interest in cardiology. This scholarship opportunity will allow her to work with Dr. Sara Pereira at the University of Utah. Kelley hopes to not only gain surgical experience in the fields of structural, transplant, and congenital cardiac surgery, but also gain mentorship under an accomplished female surgeon to build her skills in leadership and compassion.
2022 Recipient
Naima’s background has equipped her with passion and determination…qualities that have benefited her in a path to become a doctor. She is attending Oregon Health and Science University and believes mentorship is the key to a solid foundation in learning and cultivating skills that lead to a successful career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. Her mentor is Dr. Amy Fiedler at the University of California, San Francisco.
2022 Recipient
Irina is a 3rd year medical student and her interest in cardiothoracic surgery has grown due to her mentors she has had along the way. Dr. Carpenter’s scope of practice is extensive and well known. In this once in a lifetime opportunity, Irina hopes to spend her days observing and participating in as many OR cases as possible, rounding in the ICU and discussing the treatment plans of all the patients.
She believes that this opportunity with Dr. Carpenter will not only further her love for CTS, but immensely influence her future in cardiothoracic surgery while allowing her to learn from one of the most inspiring female cardiac surgeons of our time.
2021 Recipient
Lise is a general surgery resident at Columbia University where she completed her first 3 years of training. She has completed one year of ECMO research fellowship with Dr Robert Bartlett and one year of surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan before returning to Columbia. Lise received her medical degree from Yale University in 2016. She is also an MPH candidate at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr Betty Tong and Dr Brittany Zwischenberger at Duke University will be working with Lise.
2021 Recipient
Ghazal is a third year medical student at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is beyond thrilled to be learning more about the field of cardiothoracic surgery and she will be working with Dr. Leah Backhus at Stanford University.
2020 Recipient
Jackie is a first-year integrated cardiothoracic surgery resident at Duke University and recent graduate of Baylor College of Medicine (class of 2021). She will be working with Dr. Leah Backhus at Stanford University.

We are proud to announce Dr. Rachel Lewis as the 2019 recipient of the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award.
This award allows a student or general surgery resident to work with a Woman Cardiothoracic Surgeon to gain enrichment and education through mentorship.
Dr. Lewis is a third-year General Surgery Resident at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee (UTMCK), and she is currently completing a
one-year research fellowship in General Surgery at UTMCK. She received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 2016.
She will be working with Dr. Andrea J. Carpenter at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio.

We are proud to announce Carolyn Dubeau as the 2019 recipient of the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award.
This award allows a student or general surgery resident to work with a Woman Cardiothoracic Surgeon to gain enrichment and education through mentorship.
Carolyn Dubeau is a fourth year medical student at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine, Quinnipiac University and an alumna of Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN.
She is interested in academic cardiothoracic surgery and the importance of mentorship in medicine. Carolyn will be working with Dr. Andrea J. Carpenter at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio.

Robin is a medical student at Ross University interested in pursuing a career in congenital heart surgery. She will travel to UCSF Medical Center to visit WTS member Tara Karamlou, in September 2016.

Dr. Amanda Stram was the 2015 resident award recipient. She traveled with Kathleen Fenton to Ukraine for her elective period.

We are proud to announce Dr. Laura Seese as the 2015 recipient of the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award. This award allowed Dr.Seese to travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Managua, Nicaragua under the mentorship of Dr. Kathleen Fenton.

The resident award recipient is Dr. Meghan Halub, and the medical student award recipient is Sarah Schubert. Meghan and Sarah will both travel to Washington University in St. Louis to be mentored by Dr. Jennifer Lawton.

Laura Trujillo was the 2013 medical student recipient of the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award. Laura spent two weeks in Boston with Dr. Yolonda Colson in February/March 2013.

Puja Kachroo, MD was the 2013 resident recipient of the WTS Brigid Scanlan Traveling Mentorship Award. Dr. Kachroo spent two weeks in Pittsburgh with WTS Member Mentor, Dr. Manisha Shende in May 2013.
